Does it hurt our eyes to see the light through closed eyelids or through the skull?

Many people notice a glow through their eyelids or facial tissues because red and near-infrared light can penetrate tissue to some degree. This is normal.

We still recommend avoiding direct exposure into the eyes themselves. Current understanding suggests the primary concern with excessive direct exposure is heat buildup in the retina from prolonged staring directly into high-intensity light sources.
